Growth Form: Herbs, rarely shrubs or small trees, often malodorous, often viscid glandular pubescent, rarely glabrous.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Petiolate or sessile. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in panicles or racemose inflorescences, bracteate, pedicellate. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic. Usually self-compatible. Calyx tubular, 5-lobed, partly accrescent. Corolla often white but yellowish or pinkish red in Hawaiian species, tubular, the limb expanded (not in N. glauca), 5-lobed. Stamens 5, variously inserted on corolla tube; anthers dithecal, longitudinally dehiscent. Ovary superior, 2-celled, placentation axile; ovules numerous; style 1, slender; stigma capitate, slightly 2-lobed.

Fruit: Septicidal capsules; ellipsoid or ovoid; often partly enclosed in the calyx. Seeds numerous; minute; variable in shape; seed coat often reticulate or with wavy ridges; embryo straight.
